Up until now, Monmouth College students have had to register for their classes two semesters at a time. Each spring, we are faced with the task of planning an entire year of our academic lives. This semester, that is changing. For next fall and here on out, registration will now take place for one semester at a time. Monmouth College Registrar, Kristi Hippen, said that the change has been made after noticing that “70% of returning students [were] making significant adjustments during the fall registration period after having already registered for both semesters in the previous spring.” She pointed out as well that meeting two times a semester for scheduling will encourage students and their advisors to more frequently review and discuss performance and progress towards meeting graduation requirements.
Some students have expressed their unhappiness with the registration change, saying that they do not want to have to stress about scheduling twice a year or that registering early gives them “a plan.” However, the Registrar said that this alteration has brought a massive “sigh of relief” to undecided students who no longer have the looming pressure of “trying out figure out ‘right now’ what class to take a whole year from now.” To alleviate the stress of any student opposed to the modification, the Registrar wants to ensure you will still have access to the entire Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 courses schedules during spring registration. That is, you will still have all of the resources needed to plan your academic year out thoroughly, there will just be more flexibility if you change your mind.
Students should be aware that upcoming registration is for Fall 2019 classes only. In October, registration will open for the January Scots Term, Spring Semester and May Scots Term. The course schedules will be available online for viewing no later than March 11. Students will be assigned an individual registration time based on the number of course credits earned. Students will soon be able to check their registration time by clicking on “What is My Registration Time” in the MyMC announcement and on the course registration informational link located on the Registrar’s webpage. When individual registration times have been finalized and assigned, students will also receive a notification by email. Students with senior and junior standing will begin registering on March 25, students with sophomore standing on March 28 and students with freshman standing on April 1.
If any further information is needed, reach out to the Office of the Registrar or your academic advisor.
