On Saturday, September 14, Professor Mike Nelson unveiled a new tool for the students of Monmouth to embrace community and social service.
The dedication of The Center for Civic and Social Change began in the Monmouth College Garden and Farm, where speaker Dr. Esther Ngumbi, along with some locals and students, explored the work being done in forming a sustainable garden, led by the wonderful Professors Watson, Engstrom, and Vivian that maintain the garden. The importance of sustainability and community were hot topics on the tour as well as bees and chickens.
The program was then hosted in Mellinger Commons. Dr. Ngumbi spoke about the importance of engagement in your own community and gave a heartfelt talk on her own life story. She earnestly encouraged all of us, students, staff, and faculty, to pursue our dreams.
The CCSC is currently a conglomerate of programs including Global Public Health; Global Food Security; Peace, Ethics, and Social Justice; Rural Teacher Corps; and the Peace Corps Preparation Program.
If students are curious about any of these things or just want to be involved in the community, the CCSC website has resources for you. The website is currently a work in progress and will be continuously updated, so keep checking in and get involved!
