During this summer’s SOFIA program, students in Sydney Greenwalt’s psychology group were given the opportunity to create a safe space for allies and members of the LGBTQ+ community on campus called The Rainbow Room.
“I was told the Rainbow Room was something the students really wanted so seeing it come to life and hearing all the positive feedback was so amazing,” said Izzy McDermott, who participated in the SOFIA group.
Located in room 135 in the Center for Science and Business, this room is used as a gathering area as well as just a place to relax. The space is decorated with flags representing many different identities, quotes promoting individuality and safety, as well as canvases created by the SOFIA art group
As an effort to further promote and foster diversity on campus, the space is open to all students, regardless of identity. There are also resources available detailing ways to provide support to others and make campus feel welcoming as an ally.
