The Scots swim teams wrapped up the season with some outstanding performances. To put into perspective how well they did: out of 116 swims, 102 were season or life-time bests!
Friday started what would be the last meet of four Fighting Scots: Rik Doornenbal, Morgan Abraham, Brittany Lira, and Rachel Sitko. Rik proved determined to make this the most important meet of his career. Rik broke the school record in the 500 Free with a time of 4:44.89, placing 5th overall in the event. Rik went into Saturday’s finals on a high to then break another school record alongside Preston Bocchi, Tyler Davis, and Joseph Addison in the 800 Free Relay by 7 seconds with a time of 7:01.33. They all took 3rd for the event.
Saturday came to be a shock for sophomore swimmer Kyle Jones. For prelims, Kyle placed 2nd in the 100 Breast with a time of 59.09 seconds. That night in the finals, he then went to place 1st with a time of 57.89 seconds, which is close to the school record. This showed to be a great improvement from last year where he placed 4th with a time of 1:00.12.
The women overall seemed to be very triumphant in the water as well. Freshmen Jaidlyn Sellers, Becca Waxberg, Lauren Fulscher, and Kaitlynn LaGrone all made finals in their respective events, contributing to the scoring for the Scots. Marissa Logan, Maggie Wingo, and Miranda Pasky stepped up in finals as well to represent the women. Marissa placed 10th in the 1650 Free with a time of 19:21.31, dropping 81.05 seconds, setting a personal best for herself. Maggie swam in multiple relays and placed 15th in the 200 Free. Miranda placed 11th in the 100 Breast.
Preston Bocchi came to conference and defended his titles from last year. Alongside breaking a school record and placing 3rd, he repeated to place 1st in the 50 Free. Saturday, he then placed 1st in the 100 Back. Sunday, he placed 2nd in the 200 Back. What may have been a great surprise for Preston was being awarded the Male Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet. Coach Burek was proud to see him repeat as the conference champion in such a hard event. His hard work and determination proved to be quite successful. Preston is a great asset to the team and many are excited to see what is to come of his senior year.
The Scots ended the season with two conference champions and two school records broken. The women placed 6th overall, and the Men took 4th. Feeling victorious, the seniors ended their season proud to have contributed to this program. The remaining Fighting Scots can’t wait to get back into the pool next year and start another prosperous season.
