Professors Belschner and Campagna are planning a trip to Bermuda this May! If you are interested in reading and studying The Tempest and have an interest in going to Bermuda, this will be a great opportunity to do some in-depth work looking at The Tempest while also seeing a beautiful part of the world with fellow Scots. You’ll be engaging in “site-specific” work, meaning that The Tempest is closely linked to Bermuda itself. In addition, the colonial history of Bermuda makes it perfect for studying The Tempest and other adaptations that work with the themes of colonialization.
As an attendee, you’ll be able to visit different locations in Bermuda, like museums and spaces outdoors (beaches!) and link them to Bermuda’s history. As of now, the schedule includes a trip to Bermuda, as well as looking at Tobacco Bay, the Bermuda Historical Society Museum, the Bermuda National Gallery, seeing caves, a dockyard, and a snorkeling trip. Even if you’re not an English major, you will have so much fun on the trip, and any opportunity to understand a work of literature in the context it was created for is worth the time and effort. In this case, you can understand The Tempest and then go snorkeling, so it’s a win-win, honestly.
Bermuda is a beautiful place with a rich cultural history; who wouldn’t want to go? You’ll be in Bermuda at the same time as Bermuda Day, so you’ll see a parade, listen to music, dance, and enjoy the amazing atmosphere. If you’re at all considering going on this trip, please reach out to Professors Belschner and Campagna at mmb@monmouthcollege.edu and vcampagna@monmouthcollege.edu. They would be thrilled to have you come along on the trip and if you’re at all curious, there’s time to meet with one of them to chat about the trip’s importance to your college experience. Do you plan to go on the trip? Let us know on Twitter!
