After dropping the first of the doubleheader, Mon-mouth picked up their third conference win against Knox in a 6-2 decision.
The game was scoreless through three innings until the top of the fourth when the Prairie Fire seized the lead. Kobe Shutter earned the leadoff walk, but Knox flied and lined out the next two batters. Charlie Gibbons drove in Shutter from first on the two out double for the game’s first score.
The Scots answered in the bottom of the fourth as Matt Temaner reached first on an error by Knox pitcher Andrew Ponce. Harry Sanchez drove in Temaner on the very next at-bat as he tripled, evening the score at one. Mike Dato struck out on the ensuing at-bat, but Sean Davis picked up a single, scoring Sanchez from third to take the 2-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Prairie Fire evened the sc-ore. After an opening inning out, Kobe Shutter reached first after being hit by a pitch. Dalton James doubled on the following plate-appearance to advance Shutter to third. Connor Gwaltney hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Shutter to knot things at two all.
In the bottom of the sixth, Monmouth pulled back ahead as they strung together singles. Temaner started off the inning with a single, followed by a pair of singles by Dato and Davis. Davis’ single scored Temaner from second for the 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Scots erupted once again to score their final runs of the day. Harry Sanchez picked up a two RBI single. Mike Dato followed up with a double to score Sanchez.
The win moved Monmouth to 3-1 in conference play. Up next, the Scots will travel to Illinois Wesleyan for a 6 PM contest.
