Ancient studies, modern excellence: Classics department honored at CAMWS

Students in the classics department brought home several awards showcasing their hard work from the 121st annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Jenn Ruscitti, a junior, and Professor Robert Holschuh Simmons received a Faculty-Undergraduate Collaborative Research Award for their upcoming project, “Teaching Place, Displacement, and Replacement in Ancient History and Literature,” building upon a project between three other departments.Ruscitti also received a James Ruebel Undergraduate Travel Award.
Lynn Rech, Megan Dailey, Logan Serpette, Ruscitti, and Simmons presented their collaborative project “Making a Classics Day a School- and Community-Wide Event.”
Jeff Schnetzler, a senior, presented his research “Reviving the Legacy: The Reconstruction of the Ancient Discus.” Schnetzler and Simmons received the same Faculty-Undergraduate Collaborative Research Award from CAMWS last year.
Students weren’t the only award winners. Retired classics professor Tom Sienkewicz won CAMWS’ highest award, the Special Service Award. Sienkewicz taught classics for over 30 years. The award recognizes his monumental impact in the field of classics at Monmouth and across the community.
