Monmouth College’s track and field team is well into their season with many new personal records (PRs) set. Regardless of the time of day or weather, if you watch the Scots compete, you’re bound to see a group of people set new PRs.
Successful track meets do not come easy.
“I think when it comes to track and field and doing specific events week after week and being able to evaluate your performances, good or bad, is a key to success,” said Makenzie Hyett-Baker, the sprints and high jump coach.
A lot goes into getting athletes to “peak” at the right time for things like conference championships or nationals. So, those PRs along the way are just proof of the work they’ve been putting in.
“It’s honestly just their personal work ethic and the culture and standard that everyone holds each other to,” said Adrian Outlaw, a junior sprinter. Culture is a big part of the change the team has seen. “Things like the group meetings where we highlight the season bests have also led to us seeing those PRs.”
The group meetings occur weekly. Members split into groups and talk about their performance and discuss what they look forward to improving on. At the end, each group takes turns in front of the team to talk about each other's performance.
This has been a way to highlight the hard work the team has put in. Anyone who new PR will also get a picture taken with one of the “PR chains.”
The track and field team has seen a lot of success this season but there is still one big goal in their sights: winning a conference championship. The Outdoor Track and Field Conference Championships will be held on May 9th through the 10th.
