Softball: Monmouth College vs Augustana College

This past Friday, the Fighting Scots Softball team faced Augustana College in a double header at home. The Scots lost in the first game with Augustana putting up 12 points to Monmouth’s 1, ending the game in the fifth inning. The Scots did come back in the second game to win 6-3.

Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) started off on the mound when Augustana scored three runs, two unearned, in the first inning. Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) did have a leadoff double but failed to make it home.

Augustana continued to score throughout the game scoring one in the third, six in the fourth, and 2 in the fifth. That is when the Scots finally got on the board with Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois) hit a single to drive home MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) for the last run of the game.

“Our biggest weakness on this game was our ability to hit,” Warmowski said “The main focus for our next practice is going to be hitting.”

            The second game had a different outcome as the Scots walked away with a win. The Scots scored their first run in the first inning where MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) hit a single to center, bringing Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) home. The Scots then scored twice in the second inning and three times in the third.

Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) continued to keep Augustana off the board until the third inning when they scored three runs. After that though, the Vikings didn’t score anymore with Durfee getting the win with a complete game.

            Monmouth College swept Beloit on Saturday as they played another double header. The Scots dominated Beloit in the first game beating them 6-0. The second game was a little closer as the score was 7-5.

            Abby Leber started off the game strong with retiring Beloit in order in the first. The Scots then went up two runs with Leber, MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) and Lillian Hucke (Aledo, Illinois) all hitting singles to load up the bases. Hucke scored off of a busted pitch and Kloess came home on an error.

            Monmouth scored another two runs in the second with Biancha Luna (Monmouth, Illinois) hitting a double and ending up on third off a sacrifice bunt. Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) then hit a single bringing Luna home making the score 3-0.  Warmowski then scored off an error giving the Scots a 4-0 lead.

            Monmouth scored two more in the fifth. Luna doubled home Kendall Lewis (Cambridge, Illinois) for a 5-0 lead. Abby Winstead (Morton, Illinois) also hit a double to bring home Luna with the final run of the game.

Leber got the win with only allowing one hit playing a complete shutout game. She struck out five and walked one.

Lizzie Durfee (Arlington, Washington) started in the second game where Beloit scored two runs off of her. The Scots then fired right back scoring two in the bottom of the first. Warmowski singled, Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) singled and Leber’s double got the Scots in the game. Belville scored to tie the game on a groundout by Kloess. 

            With the game tied at 2-2 at the bottom of the third, Monmouth took over scoring three runs one from Lewis, Luna, and Warmowski. Making the score 5-2.

            Beloit then tied right back up in the fourth scoring three runs until Anna McCarty (Decatur, Illinois) replaced Durfee to end Beloit’s streak and get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Scots scored their final two runs of the game, one from Warmowski and one from Belville sealing the win.

            McCarty picked up the win with three shutout innings as she struck out one, walked one, and allowed only two hits.
