On Saturday February 11th, the first Roger Haynes Invitational Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Meet honored Coach Roger Haynes on his 4 decades of coaching the Monmouth track and field/cross country teams.
“I think it was a great way to honor him and his legacy. He’s a track and field icon and has dedicated his life to Monmouth College Track and Field, so it was only fitting to have a meet named after him.” said Coach Brian Woodward, who took over the head coaching position after Haynes retired.
During the six team meet, Haynes was recognized for many of the accomplishments, including being the U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association Men’s Indoor National Coach of the Year in 2007 and the Midwest Region Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2016. He was named the MWC Track and Field Coach of the year for the 53rd time during his final conference meet last Spring.
The invitational was more than just a track meet, “There were roughly 150 alums who attended that included 6 National Champions. Close to 30 potential future Fighting Scots made for an amazing environment.” said Woodard.
“The biggest takeaway I have from this meet is the impact the coach had on his teams. It is an honor to be a part of his legacy in track and field.” said 2012 graduate and track alum Kaci Lierman-Bucholtz. During the meet, the Scots won 12 events.
