Recently the History Department here at Monmouth College has gone through some unfortunate changes. Two professors have recently decided to step away and leave for various reasons. In the aspect we wish Professor Witzig and Professor Myers the best in their individual futures. But their absence has left many history majors frustrated, with their absence’s being felt on the course curriculum next year.
Professor Witzig’s specialty was in American history and Professor Myers in Europe, now there are significant gaps in the curriculum being offered, even though the remaining history department faculty, Professors De Farias and Damian have made many efforts to try to give us the broadest swath of classes possible.
The History department has also recently changed degree requirements which have both made students happy and angry. The change that has made us happy has been the ending of the history seminar course, which history students agreed was nearly useless. The unhappiness stems from a new requirement which says students need three survey courses to graduate, some soon to be seniors are unhappy this change is made going into their senior year and changing their schedules.
Overall the History Department here at Monmouth is going through a particularly rough patch, but I have confidence in the work being done by Professors De Farias and Damian that the department will come out stronger on the other side of this.
